Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler casts doubt over Darwin Nunez after win vs Brentford
Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has opined that while Darwin Nunez will be a success at the club, he will fail to match the expectations of the fans.
The Uruguay international signed for us last summer for a huge fee of 85million Pounds with add-ons. He has had a decent debut season, scoring 15 times and assisting four goals in 42 games for his new team.
But the 23-year-old has been wasteful many times this season. As good as he is, and as many times he finds himself in brilliant goal-scoring positions, Nunez has failed to capture the imagination of the fans.
Nunez started against Brentford on Saturday (May 6) but was hooked in the 65th minute after a disappointing display. He notably had the chance to double our lead when he failed to connect with a lofted pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Fowler told Premier League Productions, via Echo:
“Up to now he is (too wasteful). I said before the show, he will be a player. He will be a handful and he will take chances. And he will score goals. But to the level Liverpool fans think he will score the goals? I am not sure we will see that.”
This is Nunez’s first season in England. He also has to compete with Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo up front in search of regular starts.
He clearly has the raw skill and attributes needed to succeed. He is tall, fast and is strong on the ball. But the former SL Benfica star must start working on his finishing, especially with his weak foot.

Jurgen Klopp has also, many times, played Nunez down the left-hand side of the attack. Some fans would argue that he is better suited to playing down the middle. That being said, one can’t deny Nunez has had enough chances to probably double his current goals tally for Liverpool.
He needs to work hard in training, and there is no doubt that he already would be.
