Journo: Liverpool and Manchester City among teams planning a move for midfielder with four UCL titles

Liverpool and Manchester City planning moves for Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic

Liverpool and Manchester City are among a number of clubs that have been linked with a move for Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

According to famed journalist Ekrem Konur

, the Croatia international is the subject of interest from Liverpool, Man City, Bayern Munich and Manchester United. There is a reason why such top teams are circling him.

Kovacic, 29, is very much still in the prime years of his career. He is a smooth operator in midfield and can glide past opponents with his immaculate dribbling ability.

He is no slouch in defence either but it is his on-ball ability to weave his way out of tight spaces and find the killer pass that make him elite. Kovacic’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in June 2024 (Transfermarkt), which works in his suitors’ favour if he doesn’t refresh his terms in SW6.

We have to capitalise

For a player who has won four UEFA Champions League titles, the former Real Madrid midfielder would be hating the fact that his current team are not in Europe next season. They recently mathematically avoided relegation in gameweek 35 with a 3-1 win against Bournemouth.

Not the best days for Chelsea, who also have the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei and Conor Gallagher among a number of young players waiting to become regular first-team starters.

Liverpool, hence, have to be on alert. If Kovacic is disillusioned with the project at Chelsea or if the Blues’ potential new boss doesn’t favour him as much as the player would like, then we have to pounce.

The inclusion of Manchester City in the transfer race should be a signal for us to be on our toes. If the Cityzens really want him, then we can’t put it past them to make a move happen with the financial clout and recent success.

More Liverpool News:

This is too good a chance to miss out on. One can even compare the dribbling aesthetics to that of the magical Thiago Alcantara, and the prospect of seeing those two pair up here is enticing. He would be a definite upgrade on the injury-ridden pair of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita, whose futures at Anfield seem more uncertain than ever.
