“I dare not”- Eredivisie star opens up on future amidst Man United and Liverpool interest

Jurrien Timber talks about his future amidst interest from Liverpool and Manchester United

Ajax and the Netherlands defender Jurrien Timber has admitted that there is a chance of him moving to another club this summer with interest from Liverpool and Manchester United.

The Dutch international has laid down certain important factors that would influence him to make a move towards any club – one of them is competing for prizes.

Ajax are open to offers for him, but will only do a deal if the fee demand of around £44m is met. He is a versatile defender who can play as a central defender and a fullback.

Here’s what Timber said when asked about his future in Amsterdam (h/t Voetbal Primeur, via Metro):

“It’s the same situation for me as last season.

“When I say I’m leaving, it has to fit. The important things are playing style and playing minutes… Competing for prizes is also important. My favourite country to play in? I dare not say.”

Although Liverpool are expected to be busy in the transfer market signing midfielders, the back-line needs an addition as well.

Seeing how Trent Alexander-Arnold has been utilised by Jurgen Klopp

in the last few weeks, it won’t be surprising if the former starts as one of the central midfielders next season.

That will open up a slot at right-back. Moreover, Joel Matip is linked with AS Roma and the Cameroonian only has one year left in his contract at Anfield. Given that he is 31 now, it would be sensible to sell him this summer and buy a backup versatile defender.

Timber covers these aspects with aplomb. He has good pace to match the runs of opposition forwards, does not shirk away from physical duels, and has played with Virgil van Dijk in the Dutch national team.

With the price tag labelled on him, it is affordable for Liverpool. It remains to be seen whether Klopp and his staff approve of spending that money on the 21-year-old. Whatever happens, expect loads of activity in the market from the Reds.
