“It sounds silly to say”- Liverpool urged to spend £70m on Chelsea star instead of Alexis Mac Allister

Glen Johnson suggests Liverpool to sign Mason Mount instead of Alexis Mac Allister

Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has suggested the Reds focus on signing Mason Mount instead of Alexis Mac Allister.

Liverpool are linked with both Mac Allister and Mount ahead of an important summer transfer window for the club.

The former signed a new deal with Brighton before the World Cup but has a mechanism in his contract that will allow him to leave this summer. The latter’s contract at Chelsea expires next summer. The Blues are inching towards selling him

in the coming window.

But, Johnson thinks Mount is more suited to Liverpool’s style of play under Jurgen Klopp than Mac Allister. Here’s what he said (h/t BetFred, via Sussex Live):

“Even though it sounds silly to say, nowadays, £70 million for a good player isn’t that expensive, is it? Alexis [Mac Allister] is certainly a good player but if you have to spend £70 million, then I’d rather that money was spent on Mason Mount.

“Mason [Mount] would have suited the team better, he would have got into the starting 11 and I don’t believe that Alexis can instantly command a starting berth in Liverpool’s team. He would certainly be a good squad player, but I’d have preferred if they signed Mason Mount.”

It does sound silly Glen. Liverpool need three midfielders in the summer window to resurrect the standards in that department. After all, they are set to lose three midfielders for free at the end of this season (James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain).

So, while Mount would be a great addition and should be a necessary signing for the Reds, Mac Allister’s addition will bring a different dimension to the team.

Both players are tactically brilliant and can play in different positions. The Brighton man offers a box-to-box presence while the Chelsea star can give more in the final third.

Not many elite midfielders in the modern market will come for cheap. Liverpool must have known that by now. They cannot cut on the quantity of top midfielders they need before the start of next season.

Hence, if possible, the club should focus on signing both Mac Allister and Mount in the summer. Even that would not be enough as Fabinho needs help in defensive midfield. Manuel Ugarte has been heavily linked in that regard.
