“That’s all”- Jurgen Klopp confirms Liverpool’s summer stance on signing a new centre-back

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool step up interest in centre-backs ahead of the summer window

Liverpool FC’s Premier League season ends in Southampton on Sunday with a win all but assuring the Reds of a place in the UEFA Champions League. For that to happen, Manchester United should lose both of their remaining games to Chelsea and Fulham, and that seems too far a stretch.

However, speaking of what the Reds need for next season, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp spoke about how apart from the goalkeeper position, the Merseysiders would look to bolster their squad in each other department.

“We look in all departments apart from goalkeeper at the moment. Yes, if there is a good one (centre-back) out there, I would not deny it. That’s all. We look at all areas of the pitch, definitely.”

While stating that he would look to bolster all other positions apart from that of Alisson and Caoimhin Kelleher, he specifically spoke about getting on board centre-backs and that is something Liverpool could have answered last season itself.

What do Liverpool need?

We all know despite the reckoning force he is, Virgil van Dijk is certainly not on the same levels as before and needs a break here and there. Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, even with their qualities, are too inconsistent and that leaves just Ibrahima Konate as the one stable option.

Chelsea’s Levi Colwill, currently on loan at Brighton has certainly caught the eye of scouts at Liverpool and as we know, the Blues could be too demanding with their prices. Hence, the Reds need to operate smartly in the upcoming transfer window.

Having said that, the priorities would naturally remain reinforcements in the middle of the pitch. James Milner leaving the club leaves behind a very big void in terms of versatility and the hospital staff at the Reds wouldn’t be too happy to see Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain leave as well.

That makes it important for the Reds to address this issue and get on board midfielders before we look to divert our attention to other areas of the pitch. Jurgen Klopp is smart enough to understand this, and hopefully, takes action accordingly.
