As per a tweet from transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Adrian has signed a new deal with Liverpool that will keep him at the club during the 2023/24 season.
Adrian, who was signed for free in the summer of 2019, is the third-choice keeper behind Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher. It is revealed that the official announcement will be done soon.
The Spaniard hasn’t played much in the last couple of seasons since making a handful of appearances during the 2019/20 campaign.
The former West Ham United keeper was the shootout hero in Liverpool’s Super Cup win over Chelsea in 2019. He played a few league games in that campaign which ended with the Reds lifting the league title.
With Kelleher coming up the ranks and doing well, the Irishman gets to play whenever Alisson needs a rest or is injured.
A few days ago, Jurgen Klopp was asked about the areas the club will target to bolster in the summer transfer window. The German replied that they will be looking at every department, except the goalkeeper.
That gave us enough of an idea that neither Kelleher nor Adrian is going to leave Anfield in the coming weeks.
While the latter is a third-choice keeper and doesn’t play anymore, he is a good character to have in the dressing room. He can speak Spanish and English and has the experience to make the young players feel comfortable.
At times, a player’s importance is not measured by what he does on the pitch. Creating a good culture off the field with the help of players like Adrian can do wonders and let’s hope the 36-year-old fulfills his role as expected of him.
