Liverpool ‘seriously interested’ in Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven

Liverpool reportedly show keen interest in securing the services of Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven during this summer’s transfer window. While midfield reinforcements are the priority for the Reds, a new addition in defence could also be on the cards, considering the defensive struggles the team faced in a disappointing season.

According to a report in the Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung (via Football Oranje) (h/t liverpool.com), the Reds set their sights on him, with the 22-year-old catching the eye of manager Jurgen Klopp.

In addition to his potential, Micky van de Ven offers the advantage of becoming a more cost-effective option compared to Josko Gvardiol as Wolfsburg values him at £34m.

Despite having a strong attacking lineup, the Reds struggled defensively and suffered from inconsistent performances at the back. Signing a talented and promising centre-back like Van de Ven could provide the much-needed stability and depth to the squad’s defensive line.

Another “Van” to the Reds’ defence

At just 22 years of age, Van de Ven has already showcased his abilities and earned recognition from Klopp. His presence in the backline could bring a fresh dimension to Liverpool’s defensive setup, complementing the team’s high-pressing and aggressive style of play.

While the club’s primary focus may be on strengthening the midfield, it is evident that Klopp and his recruitment team are actively exploring defensive options as well.

Van de Ven’s potential arrival would not only address the team’s defensive concerns but also add competition for places, pushing the current defenders to perform at their best.

Moreover, the futures of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez are uncertain and hence, making a significant investment in the defence of the squad will not hurt the Reds by any means.
