Thiago’s Liverpool future hangs in the balance
As Liverpool undergo a midfield revamp to re-energize their side, it seems that Thiago Alcantara may not be part of the club’s long-term plans.
The Spanish midfielder, who arrived from Bayern Munich in 2020 with high expectations, remains unlikely to stand subject to a new deal by Liverpool, leaving his future at Anfield uncertain. (h/t The Mirror)
Despite his undeniable technical skills and vast experience, Thiago has struggled to consistently reach the heights expected of him since joining the Reds. Injuries have plagued his time on Merseyside, limiting his game time and preventing him from making a significant impact on the pitch.
As Liverpool look to reinvigorate their squad, it appears that Thiago’s age and injury issues have influenced the club’s decision not to offer him a contract extension. At this stage of his career, with the midfielder 32 already, the club is focused on building for the future and also, finding players who can contribute consistently. Quite ironically though, we still employ older midfielders than him.
What next for the Spaniard?
According to Goal via The Mirror, Liverpool is unlikely to sell Thiago this summer. Instead, the club seems willing to let his current contract run down, allowing him to depart on a free transfer in 12 months’ time, at the end of his contract with the Reds (Transfermarkt).
This decision reflects the desire to maintain squad depth for the upcoming season, even if it means losing the services of a player of Thiago’s calibre in the near future.
Liverpool fans will always appreciate Thiago’s technical brilliance and the glimpses of his undeniable talent that he showcased during his time at Anfield.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, the club’s decision not to offer him a new deal should not overshadow the contributions he has made and the memories he has created.
