Chelsea are edging ahead in the race to sign Liverpool target Gabri Veiga

As per Spanish outlet Relevo (h/t Express), Liverpool are no longer the favourites to sign Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga as Chelsea have entered the race.

The report reveals that new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has told the club to hijack Liverpool’s potential move for the young Spaniard.

Veiga has a release clause of £34m in his contract with Celta. His term with the La Liga side runs until the summer of 2026 (Transfermarkt).

If all this is true, it does not sound good for the Reds. For a price as good as that, Veiga would be a fantastic addition to the midfield.

He generally plays in a midfield pivot with an eye for a goal or two. In the recently-concluded 2022/23 season, the 21-year-old scored 11 goals and assisted four in 40 appearances in all competitions.

The Celta youth product is a technically solid player who is good on the ball, has a good shot in him, can run from box to box and can be creatively smart in and around the final third.

In the Liverpool system under Jurgen Klopp, Veiga can be used as a right-sided midfielder with the freedom to move forward and join attacks. The defensive work has to be there too.

We know that the Reds are not a club that spends big money on a player unless there is an equaliser in place through sales.

Keeping that in mind, if a good young player like Veiga is available for £34m, they should be all over getting him before Chelsea.

Cost should not be an issue in this potential deal. It is a different matter if Klopp and the coaching staff have someone else in mind and kept the Spaniard as a backup option.
