Liverpool have Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven high on the shortlist

As per David Lynch of Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven high on their defensive shortlist for the summer transfer window.

Van de Ven is currently playing for a club whose director used to be Jorg Schmadtke (working at Liverpool now). Will that past connection work in favour of the Reds? We wait and see about that.

The Dutch U21 captain has previously stated his desire to move to a bigger club. Wolfsburg are not interested in selling him now though.

Van de Ven will be a part of the Netherlands side competing in the Euros 21 starting this week. His current contract with Wolfsburg runs until the summer of 2027 (Transfermarkt).

The 22-year-old is a left-sided defender who chiefly operates on the left of a three-man central defence under Niko Kovac. He can play as a left-back as well if needed.

Liverpool could do with a defensive addition in the summer after a season where every defender looked out of sorts. Moreover, if Jurgen Klopp wants to continue using Trent Alexander-Arnold in the hybrid role, they should sign a wide centre-back on either side to help the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Andrew Robertson/Kostas Tsimikas.

Van de Ven is a technically solid defender who reads the game well, is aerially strong, possesses extravagant pace for a tall defender, and is a good passer of the ball.

Liverpool have gone a bit quiet in the transfer market after the early signature of Alexis Mac Allister. The ideal way should be to get the signings done before the pre-season so that the new additions join the squad as early as possible.
