Charlie Adam calls on Liverpool to sign 33-year-old treble winning star

Liverpool urged to sign Manchester City star Kyle Walker by Charlie Adam

Rising speculation of Kyle Walker leaving Manchester City over the summer transfer window has led a number of people, including Charlie Adam, the latest one to urge Liverpool to sign the Yorkshireman.

Not very long ago, former Liverpool star Don Hutchinson put out a tweet urging the Reds to get Walker on board. The latest to jump on that bandwagon is former Red Charlie Adam who spoke to 888sport via ECHO and here is what he told them:

“It looks like Kyle Walker is possibly going to leave Man City. It’s someone for me who they could try and have a look at. They’ll need to bring a right-back in if they persist with Trent [Alexander-Arnold] in midfield. I’d expect them to have at least one more midfielder in the building this window, too, but until the deal is done, you can only speculate.”

While a player of Walker’s calibre could give the team results in the immediate future, in the long term, it would surely not prove to be a wise investment. At 33, he would hardly play at the top of the European game for a maximum of two seasons beyond which it is natural for performance levels to go down.

At the present moment, Liverpool need players who could provide them cover for the short term and then take over the baton when the time comes. However, signing Walker will go against that requirement even though it means getting on a serial winner albeit on a short-term basis.

Do we need Walker?

While there are absolutely no questions over the quality of Walker, it comes down only to two factors when it is about Liverpool signing him or not. The obvious age issue is one, alongside his wage demands, which could potentially hamper the team’s culture and environment.

Our links with right-backs in recent weeks make sense with Trent Alexander-Arnold playing in the form of his life on the right side of the midfield for England.

Many have even urged Jurgen Klopp to do the same, but somehow, having Trent as an inverted full-back has shown results in him having more touches and exploring his creativity to the max.

Having said that, it is certainly important that the Reds utilise all available funds primarily towards sourcing a midfielder as that is the need of the hour at the club. Secondary requirements include a right-back and a right-winger, but that surely doesn’t require immediate thought.

The upcoming season for Liverpool is surely one of promise, and hopefully, we can compensate for our lack of fight this season next time around by getting along some silverware on our way to glory.
