Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold knows the Red will need to be “near perfect” to challenge Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.
In the previous campaign, the England international and the Merseyside outfit struggled to keep up with the Sky Blues after having competed for all four titles in the 2021/22 season.
The Anfield side ended up finishing fifth in the league table as the Cityzens marched on to their third straight English top-flight trophy. Pep Guardiola’s team also finished the campaign on a high after lifting the Champions League and completing the treble.
While Liverpool were poor, speaking to Sky Sports, Trent is confident about challenging City in the next season, as we have done in the past. The full-back is confident that the Reds are capable of getting back to the top.
“We know how to win the league, we know how to challenge City and go toe to toe with them and you need to be near perfect throughout the season so for us that’s where our heads are at.”
Guardiola has built a formidable side in Manchester. In the last six years, we have been the only team to pip the Sky Blues to the league title. In the 2019/20 term, the Anfield side finally ended their PL trophy drought.
It would not be a surprise to see the Cityzens further strengthen in the ongoing transfer window. However, we will also seemingly have to worry about Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle United as well.
Therefore, Liverpool and Trent need to turn things around drastically next season. The English national was unconvincing for most of the previous campaign.
However, Jurgen Klopp was able to bring the best out of the 24-year-old in a hybrid role, where the right-back dropped into the midfield. He thrived in a similar role for the Three Lions recently.
Hopefully, Liverpool will make other additions to the squad apart from Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai. The Reds cannot finish another season outside the top four.
