Liverpool cool interest in Bundesliga starlet after Jorg Schmadtke ‘consultation’

Liverpool step away from interest in Micky van de Ven following consultation between Jurgen Klopp and Jorg Schmadtke

As per the German publication Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (h/t Liverpool Echo

), Liverpool have cooled their interest in Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven following a consultation between Jurgen Klopp and Jorg Schmadtke.

The latter must have had a bit more information on the player as he was working at Wolfsburg before joining the Reds this summer.

As per the BBC, Tottenham Hotspur are confident of getting the deal to sign van de Ven in the coming days. They would be buoyed by the backing off from Liverpool as they continue to search for players who can compete with Eric Dier and Cristian Romero at a high level.

It is revealed that after discussions between Klopp and Schmadtke, they concluded that the young Dutch defender is still not ready to make a jump in his career and play for Liverpool.

The Reds are in the market for a centre-back. Levi Colwill is being linked while Torino’s Perr Schuurs is on the radar as well. Mirror stated that the latter would want a move to Anfield.

Despite having decent options at the back, it was clear by the end of last season that Klopp needs a new centre-back to freshen up things. Bringing the average age of that department down must be a priority.

Let’s trust what the manager and Schamdtke thought about van de Ven and move on with it. That is, after all, what the latter was brought in for. The hope is that the club is ready to back him with the funds required to sign a defender in the coming days.

If not now, we could come to regret it as we did in the injury-plagued 2020-21 season.

The Dutchman moving to Spurs would be good for us to have a close look at what he is all about. If he does well there, maybe Liverpool can make a sneaky bid in 2025 and sign him. If it goes bad for him, then we will look back at this moment and realise the master-stroke by Klopp and Schmadtke.
