Wolves eye Liverpool star Caoimhin Kelleher

Wolverhampton Wanderers could be set to test Liverpool’s resolve by materialising their interest in goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

According to the Daily Mail, the Reds value the goalkeeper at around £20million. Wolves, meanwhile, are said to want a replacement for the outgoing Jose Sa.

Liverpool seem to be suffering from the luxury of having two good goalkeepers. Alisson Becker is, without a doubt, one of the best in the business.

There is absolutely no dropping him or selling him. Hence, the best Kelleher can hope for right now is a spot on the bench.

What next for Kelleher?

Alisson is also ‘just’ 30 — the shelf lives of goalkeepers tend to be more. So the Ireland international risks wasting his best years on our bench.

No Liverpool fan would want the club to have a below-par second-choice goalkeeper. We know very well that an injury to a first-team star can derail our season.

Jurgen Klopp has done his best to make Kelleher a part of the team, even starting him in the EFL Cup final in the 2021-22 season, which we won against Chelsea in the penalty shootouts. But it can’t be good enough for a player who is now 24 years old.

In the event of Sa’s departure, Kelleher could get great playing time at the Molineux-based outfit. Liverpool can also make a neat little earning from a player who isn’t in their starting XI.

But we can’t go back to Adrian San Miguel as our third-choice goalkeeper. He is 36 years old and is clearly declining. Neither is he reliable enough to consider as a dependable replacement for Alisson for more than a handful of games in a season. Could this be the opportunity Marcelo Pitaluga has been waiting for?
