More than a month after his contract at Liverpool came to an end, former Red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain closes in on a move to Turkish giants Besiktas. The 29-year-old still has loads of football left in him, and Turkey is among the best places in the world to reignite the desire to play competitive football at the top level.
That is according to Liverpool ECHO. The former Arsenal man rejected moves to Brentford and numerous clubs in Saudi to take the offer at Besiktas up. He would be the highest-earning player at the Turkish club. Sadly, numerous injury issues did not allow him to have a successful career at Reds from a personal perspective. However, he would have little to no regrets given he won every possible trophy available.
The versatile midfielder made 146 appearances for Liverpool across all competitions scoring 18 goals and 15 assists. A number of these goals have come at a time when the team really needed someone to step up. Ox has given a fair share of memorable moments for the Anfield faithful to cherish.
The allure of Besiktas, a club with a storied history and an ardent fanbase, provides the perfect backdrop for the Englishman to channel his energy and skill. Turkey’s footballing landscape is renowned for its intensity, and the raucous atmospheres in its stadiums are the kind that can spark a resurgence in a player’s career.
As Oxlade-Chamberlain sets his sights on the next chapter of his footballing journey, Liverpool fans will reflect on his tenure with a sense of gratitude and a little bit of regret as well knowing that the Ox could not fulfil his potential due to things not in his control.
His situation is very similar to that of Naby Keita’s time at the club. Both were extremely promising players, but sadly, both, “made of glass” as they say. The Turkish league’s fierce competition promises to be a platform for the talented midfielder to rediscover his abilities and make his mark anew.
Ox’s imminent move to Besiktas symbolizes a fresh beginning for a talented midfielder who still possesses much to offer the beautiful game. Turkey’s footballing arena promises a captivating stage for him to reignite his competitive fire.
Hopefully, his time at Besiktas is much more fruitful from a personal perspective given his not-so-successful time at the Reds.
