Glen Johnson backs Liverpool to sign Newcastle star for £100m

Liverpool backed to sign Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United

Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has weighed in on the Reds’ interest in Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, advocating for the Brazilian’s potential move to Anfield.

In an interview with GGRecon, Johnson expressed his admiration for Guimaraes, highlighting his key role at Newcastle United and his impressive qualities on the pitch. Johnson’s comments come in the wake of reports suggesting that Liverpool made a late summer move for the talented Brazil international.

“Absolutely because I really like him. He’s been a key player for Newcastle United, and he’s got an awful lot about him. I can understand why Liverpool would want to sign him because he’s proven himself already at this level. I think all parties would be happy if Liverpool could sign him for £100 million.”

Johnson’s endorsement of Guimaraes as a potential Liverpool signing surely underlines the midfielder’s reputation as a talented and impactful player. His praise acknowledges Guimaraes’ ability to make a meaningful contribution to a top-tier Premier League club.

However, it’s worth noting that Liverpool focused on strengthening their midfield depth during the summer transfer window, securing the signings of players like Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, and Ryan Gravenberch. These acquisitions were aimed at bolstering the midfield options at Jurgen Klopp’s disposal.

Moreover, Liverpool’s need for a specific type of midfielder, potentially a defensive-minded one, remains a priority. While Guimaraes possesses qualities that would make him a valuable asset, the Reds may prioritize a midfielder who fits a more traditional defensive midfield profile to balance their midfield.

It’s also essential to acknowledge that a potential £100 million price tag for Guimaraes might not align with Liverpool’s transfer strategy. The club has historically been cautious with their spending, focusing on value-for-money deals and nurturing young talent.

Interestingly, Joelinton, a fellow Brazilian and Guimaraes’ teammate at Newcastle United has also seen himself linked with a move to Liverpool in the past. Joelinton’s profile as a defensive midfielder with versatility might offer a more suitable fit for Liverpool’s requirements at this stage.

While Guimaraes possesses qualities that would make him an asset, Liverpool’s focus on midfield depth and the need for a specific CDM profile could impact their pursuit of the Brazilian. Additionally, the potential financial outlay of £100 million requires careful consideration within Liverpool’s transfer strategy.
