Pep Lijnders offers update on injured Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has offered an update on the fitness of English star Trent Alexander-Arnold and has revealed that he has returned to light training with the ball.

The English right-back has been out of action since suffering a hamstring injury against Aston Villa earlier this season. He is nearing his return to action but Lijnders was not too optimistic that it would be against Leicester City.

Especially since Liverpool are set to face Tottenham Hotspur this weekend, the Reds will be wary of risking the talented right-back against the Foxes. Ange Postecoglou’s team are unbeaten in the league and have taken points off Manchester United and Arsenal.

This weekend’s clash will not be easy for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp will know that. Firstly though, the Reds need to face Leicester City in the Carabao Cup and make sure they can get past the Championship side. It is not the most important tournament but it still is a trophy.

In the absence of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez has filled in at right-back and performed admirably. However, it is widely expected that once Trent is fit, he would walk straight back into the playing XI and rightly so. There are not many players in the world who are as creative as the 24-year-old.

Speaking ahead of the game against the Foxes, Klopp’s number two offered an insight into how the Englishman is shaping up

“Trent trained yesterday with us but it was just in the rondo and the ball possession with the counter-pressing, but he was outstanding.  I am not sure if he will be ready, we will see today”

Liverpool have started off really well this season and Trent too. After a miserable last season with the Reds, the English right-back’s upward trajectory started towards the end of last campaign when Jurgen Klopp altered his system to deploy him as a false midfielder.

It is important for Trent to come back and come back strong. If he is to return for the Tottenham game as expected, facing the likes of Son Heung-min and Manor Solomon is not going to be easy. Defensively, Trent still has his doubters.
