Liverpool faces steadfast opposition from Brentford to sign their promising star, Aaron Hickey
Football Insider (h/t Edinburgh Evening News) reports Liverpool would have to offer a “huge” deal to sign Brentford defender Aaron Hickey. The 21-year-old has attracted interest from top clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United, and German giants Bayern Munich.
The Bees are not looking to put their promising talent on the market and Hickey is “happy” staying at Brentford. Brentford signed Hickey from Serie A side Bologna on the 2022 summer transfer window. The deal was worth more than £17m with add-ons.
The 21-year-old has played 33 games for Brentford so far in all competitions and has contributed with one assist. Hickey does his best work on the defensive aspect of the game where he earned a reputation for his passion and hard-hitting tackling.
Hickey possesses remarkable versatility, showcasing his ability to excel in various positions. He can operate as a fullback on either side or take on the role of a centre-back.
Additionally, the young Scottish player is adept at assuming a defensive midfield position, skillfully navigating tight spaces. His keen sense of anticipation enables him to effectively assess potential threats and engage in playmaking from deep positions. Even during his teenage years, when he was just 21, Hickey exhibited physical maturity, standing tall at six feet one inch.
During his stint at Bologna, comparisons arose between Hickey and Liverpool’s accomplished left-back, Andy Robertson. However, Hickey modestly downplayed these comparisons, acknowledging their unrealistic nature in the current context, a testament to his down-to-earth character.
It is understandable that Liverpool has an interest in a player with such remarkable versatility. They lost James Milner in the summer and the midfielder filled many areas for Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp when required. The Reds boss has a preference for versatile players he can use in multiple positions.
Klopp deployed Stefan Bajčetić to the right-back position against LASK in the Europa League opening fixture. The Liverpool squad has only one natural right back in Trent Alexander-Arnold and in his absence, Joe Gomez covers the flanks. It is clear that the Reds can benefit from having more serious competition and cover for the right-back spot.
Hickey’s contentment with the Bees comes is understandable considering the young Scottish defender wants to play regular club football to maintain his place in Steve Clarke’s Scotland team.
