Liverpool handed a transfer blow in their pursuit of Exequiel Palacios
Liverpool FC’s pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen start Exequiel Palacios appears to have hit a snag, potentially dealing a blow to their transfer plans in the upcoming windows.
The talented defensive midfielder has been making waves at Bayer Leverkusen since his arrival in 2020, and Liverpool recently saw themselves linked with a move for the 24-year-old during the final days of the summer transfer window. Palacios, a part of Argentina’s victorious World Cup squad, stood considered a potential addition to the Reds’ squad before Liverpool secured a deal for Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich.
The Athletic [subscription required] reported last month that Palacios piqued Liverpool’s interest, but Leverkusen remained determined to retain their prized midfielder. It now appears that the German club has succeeded in doing just that, as Palacios has committed to a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2028 (Transfermarkt)
Liverpool’s interest in Palacios had been a topic of discussion in recent weeks, with many speculating on the potential acquisition of the talented Argentine. However, with the signing of Ryan Gravenberch, Liverpool has secured a highly regarded midfielder, which may significantly reduce their pursuit of Palacios.
No Palacios for the Reds?
Gravenberch’s arrival at Anfield from Bayern Munich has bolstered Liverpool’s midfield options and added a fresh dimension to Jurgen Klopp’s squad. With the Dutch midfielder in the fold, Liverpool’s focus may shift away from Palacios, who has now extended his contract with Bayer Leverkusen.
While Palacios is undoubtedly an exceptional talent, Liverpool’s midfield resources see themselves further enriched by the addition of Gravenberch, making it less pressing for the club to secure Palacios’ services. Klopp now has a dynamic midfield lineup to work with, and the competition for places in the team will surely intensify, with Gravenberch joining the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Thiago Alcantara among others in the midfield ranks.
As the season progresses, Liverpool fans will be eager to see how Gravenberch adapts to the Premier League and how he contributes to the team’s pursuit of silverware.
