Liverpool target Andre Trindade talks about rejecting summer move to Merseyside
Liverpool FC’s pursuit of Fluminense midfielder Andre has been no secret, and the talented Brazilian has recently shed light on his decision to stay put last summer and his openness to a potential January transfer.
The Reds made a substantial bid for Andre in August, but the bid ultimately saw itself rejected by the Brazilian club. Fluminense’s ambitious aim to secure victory in the Copa Libertadores was reason for them to rebuff the bid from Liverpool.
Fluminense’s resilience has indeed paid off, as they have reached the final set to take place next month against Argentine titans Boca Juniors. Their quest to win the coveted trophy for the first time has been a longstanding ambition, following their defeat in the 2008 final.
A £25m bid in the summer from the Reds for Andre was understandably not enough to break Fluminese ambitions of winning the Copa Libertadores with the 22-year-old in the middle of the park. Speaking of rejecting a move to the Reds in the summer, here is what the midfielder had to say in an interview with CONMEBOL Libertadores on X via the Mirror:
“I think every player one day dreams of playing for a big club in Europe, in a big league. But I decided to keep my word because when the January window closed, Diniz [Fluminense manager] arrived and told me that he wanted me here until the end of the year. We didn’t know that a proposal of that amount would arrive and I told him that, regardless of what happened, I would be there until the end of the season.”
What makes this promise remarkable is that it was made before the massive proposal arrived from Liverpool, which further underscores Andre’s commitment to the club that nurtured his talent.
Andre to the Reds in January?
Andre’s decision to prioritise his current club’s interests and the ongoing Copa Libertadores campaign is a testament to his professionalism and dedication. It also speaks to his desire to contribute to Fluminense’s historic quest for continental glory.
Now, Andre has provided insight into his thought process and the promise he made to the club regarding his future. He confirmed that he had already committed to staying with Fluminense for the entirety of 2023. However, he also mentioned his willingness to reassess his future in January 2024. This, he believes, is a sensible course of action given the success the club has enjoyed in recent times, which has likely elevated his market value.
As the January transfer window approaches, Liverpool’s interest in Andre remains ongoing. This opens the door for potential negotiations and a transfer that could see the Brazilian midfielder ply his trade in the Premier League for the Reds. We could do with some fine-tuning when it comes to the defensive midfield position and Andre could just come in as the right fit.
