Jurgen Klopp claims Liverpool star Darwin Nunez has immense potential

It finally seems like Darwin Nunez is settling into life on Merseyside in Liverpool colours. After a tough season last term, for him and the club both, the 23-year-old Uruguayan international was subject to a lot of trolling and criticism online. Speaking ahead of the Reds’ visit to Luton Town, manager Jurgen Klopp addressed the media and had only positive words about the former Benfica man.

Last season, as we all know, was extremely tough for Darwin. The early sending-off against Crystal Palace surely did not help his rhythm. Moreover, settling into a Liverpool squad that was in itself in a transition phase, we can only imagine how tough it was to find himself in a place where only a few speak the language he does.

While there are freaks like Erling Haaland who just came and took the Premier League by storm, everyone is not a superhuman. Anyway, the comparisons with the Norweigan coming into the season also did not help. But this season, tides change and Darwin seems like he’s found his feet. From this point on, it would just be about consistently performing and contributing to the team.

Speaking ahead of our clash against Luton Town, here is what manager Jurgen Klopp had to say about Darwin to the press via Liverpool Echo:

“His English is now that much better. Everything is different, he’s in a very good moment, and this is still only the start. Long may it continue. I’m afraid of the highs he could reach. Let’s work from here.”

Nunez Nunez Nunez!

Nunez’s life in England so far can be perfectly summarised with a video of his goal against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup recently. A first touch that would have embarrassed most but a finish that would have made the likes of Luis Suarez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic proud. Tough beginnings, but world-class potential.

In 14 appearances across all competitions this season, Darwin has seven goals and five assists to his name, and he could not have dreamt of a better start to his second season with the Reds. Coming off the bench to score against the Cherries, he made a case for himself to start against Luton Town this weekend.

It would be interesting to see how Jurgen Klopp picks his lineup for the Reds’ visit to Kenilworth Road given he has an abundance of options to choose from when it comes to the frontline. The likes of Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo have both scored in their last appearances for the club, and one would have to be joking if they say Mohamed Salah warrants a drop after the season he’s having.

The future looks extremely bright for Darwin, and we can only hope that he lives up to his potential. The chances of that are very high given he has just the right people around him to guide him through the tough times. Jurgen Klopp and Co. would surely help him realise his capacity. Possibly go beyond that as well.
