Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate set to be replaced by Axel Disasi in France squad after latest injury
Ibrahima Konate at Liverpool has been a very frustrating figure – looking imperiously good when he plays on the pitch only to suffer an injury that rules him out for a few weeks. Axel Disasi is now set to replace him in the France squad for the international break.
Konate brings a lot to the table. He is a physical yet pacy defender who is almost impossible to get past. Alongside Virgil van Dijk, he can be a rock at the back in central defence. It has not been easy for him to remain fit though.
This development comes as a blow to both the club and Konate himself, who was poised to join the French national squad for the international break but now has to focus on his recovery.
Konate’s absence was first noted during Liverpool’s recent victory over Brentford, where he was a surprise absentee. The defender suffered a minor hamstring injury during the warm-up for Liverpool’s UEFA Europa League match against Toulouse FC.
This injury is severe enough to sideline him for approximately two weeks, ruling him out of France’s fixtures against Gibraltar and Greece. In his place, Chelsea’s Axel Disasi has been called up to the French squad. This is according to RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins (h/t Liverpool Echo)
For Liverpool, this injury could not have come at a worse time. The club were already dealing with a string of absences, including those of Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones, and Ryan Gravenberch, leading to a significantly youthful bench with an average age of just 20.
Konate’s injury is a significant hurdle for Liverpool, testing the depth and resilience of their squad. It highlights the unpredictability of football, where injuries can disrupt well-laid plans and force managers to adapt swiftly.
The Frenchman would have been eager to link up with the national team and play in Didier Deschamps’ squad. However, when fit, he will be called up and he must take this injury on his chin and move on.

It is no secret now that Konate is injury-prone. Liverpool need to find a way to manage him to not overdo his workload and keep him available when it matters the most.
