Cody Gakpo, the versatile star in Liverpool’s ranks, has opened up about his adaptability to different positions on the field. The Dutch international, who joined Liverpool in January last year, has showcased his flexibility by seamlessly transitioning between roles, featuring as a striker, midfielder, and left-winger.
Reflecting on his varied roles, Gakpo expressed his eagerness for continuous improvement. The player, ever since his move from PSV in January earlier this year has been playing extremely well for the team, and has done everything the gaffer has asked of him, including playing in unnatural positions.
Last season marked Gakpo’s introduction to the Anfield faithful, where he predominantly featured as a striker, adapting quickly to the demands of English football. However, this season has seen the Dutchman don different hats, contributing from the midfield and operating as a dynamic presence on the left wing.
Here is what Gakpo told the club’s official website:
“Obviously I’ve played in a few different positions – striker, midfield and left wing,”
“I think I can do better, obviously. You want to do better every day and become a better player all the time.”
Gakpo’s ability to seamlessly integrate into various positions underscores his footballing intelligence and adaptability, qualities highly valued in Jurgen Klopp’s system. The Liverpool manager, known for his emphasis on positional play and fluid attacking movements, has found in Gakpo a player capable of thriving in multiple roles.
The Dutch star’s evolution from a primary striker last season to a multifaceted player this year aligns with Klopp’s philosophy of creating a squad with diverse skill sets. In 15 appearances across all competitions this season, he has four goals and an assist to his name.
The former PSV man’s versatility not only provides tactical flexibility but also bolsters Liverpool’s attacking options, allowing for strategic adjustments based on the dynamics of each game.
As Gakpo navigates through different positions, his commitment to continuous improvement shines through. Although going forward it is highly unlikely that he’ll turn up in midfield, it is great to see him have such an open mindset towards it and improve himself as a footballer.
Cody Gakpo’s journey at Anfield is one marked by versatility, adaptability, and the constant pursuit of excellence, promising a bright future for the Dutch star in Liverpool’s history.
