Ajax coach John van ‘t Schip confirms interest in former Liverpool man Jordan Henderson

Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson could return to European football sooner than expected. Eredivisie giants Ajax show concrete interest in signing the player, as confirmed by the club’s Head Coach, John van ‘t Schip. The 33-year-old Englishman switched Liverpool for Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq to join forces with Steven Gerrard in the summer transfer window.

However, a series of things including a tough time adjusting to life in the Middle East has prompted Hendo to explore a future in a much comfortable environment, and Ajax’s interest comes at just the right time for the player who is looking for a change.

His move to the Middle East in the first place came amid a lot of criticism. Contrary to his beliefs and campaigns on LGTBQ rights, he moved to a country where homosexuality is a punishable offence. Not only that, there is a sense of belief among a major chunk of Liverpool fans that Henderson could have left the club with much more grace than he did, and the big fat cheque is the only thing that prompted him to move to a “Project League”.

Anyways, speaking of Ajax’s interest in securing Hendo’s services, here is what the Dutch club’s manager had to say via ESPN:

“There is serious talk going on with Henderson,”

“He still has some things to arrange in Saudi Arabia.”

“It could be a nice match. It’s no secret that we could really use that type of player. Other guys can benefit from that.”

Uncertain future

The potential move to Ajax would offer Henderson a return to the European football landscape and present him with a chance to contribute to a club known for its attacking style of play and the development of talented players. Ajax has a storied history and has consistently been a breeding ground for emerging football talents and Hendo’s experience is surely something they can learn from.

Coming weeks will likely see increased speculation and scrutiny surrounding Henderson’s potential move to Ajax, as football enthusiasts and pundits alike await the resolution of this unexpected twist in the seasoned midfielder’s career.

From a Liverpool perspective, the fact that the Reds have a sell-on clause means we will stand to benefit financially in case Ettifaq sell Henderson. This is just another example of Hendo helping Liverpool out. The way he left the club has polarised opinions and questioned his standing among the Reds’ legends.

Jordan Brian Henderson has won it all with Liverpool.

Until he was at the club, he served us to the top of his abilities and remained professional throughout. Certainly did not force a move out like some. Moreover, he’s a Premier League-winning captain for Liverpool. The list begins and ends with him, so indeed, he should go down as a legend in his true right.
