Liverpool are yet to contact Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim to replace Jurgen Klopp
Jurgen Klopp who took over from Brendan Rodgers in October 2015, has a contract set to run until 2026 but he has decided to say goodbye to Anfield together with his long-time assistant managers Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, along with elite development coach Vitor Matos.
The German has taken the Reds back to the glory days by inspiring them to win several titles including the Champions League, Premier League UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup.
The 56-year-old could add to his trophy collection as Liverpool are currently competing in four competitions, having reached the final of the Carabao Cup and will take on Chelsea in a repeat of the 2022 final where Klopp’s side won on penalties.
The departure of an influential figure like Klopp marks the end of a significant era for Liverpool. Several managers have been linked with the job and Xabi Alonso has emerged as a frontrunner among other candidates.
Alonso, who enjoyed a successful five-year spell at Anfield from 2004 to 2009, securing both the FA Cup and Champions League, has garnered attention for his coaching prowess at Leverkusen. The 42-year-old is the favourite but Ruben Amorim has surprisingly emerged as a potential candidate to succeed Klopp as the next Liverpool manager.
According to the Portuguese outlet Record, Amorim has not been contacted by Liverpool and the scenario has ‘never arisen’.
It has been reported that Amorim requests the Lisbon executives not to engage in discussions about managerial approaches during the season as he aims to maintain his focus on matters related to the Portuguese side.
Sporting are currently at the top of Liga Portugal after 19 games, one point ahead of Benfica. The 39-year-old’s future will be discussed in the summer as his current contract is set to expire in 2026.
Portuguese outlet Record further states that there is a release clause of €30 million (£25.5 million) for Portuguese clubs and €20 million (£17 million) for those abroad, hence Liverpool would have pay the latter if they are keen on bringing Amorin to Anfield.
Amorim retired from playing with Benfica in 2017 and started his coaching career with Portuguese top-flight club Casa Pia in 2018 before taking on the role of ‘B’ team manager at Braga.
The young manager was promoted to the position of senior team head coach in 2019 and, a year later, assumed the managerial role at Sporting in March 2020. Over nearly four years at Sporting, Amorim secured one Portuguese top-division title in his first full season (2020/21). He has since led Sporting to second and fourth-place finishes in the last two seasons, earning qualification for the Champions League twice.
