Scott Minto says Roberto De Zerbi suits Manchester City more than Liverpool
Former Charlton Athletic and Chelsea left-back Scott Minto weighs in on the managerial prospects of Roberto De Zerbi, suggesting that the Brighton & Hove Albion manager might stand as a better fit for Manchester City than Liverpool.
Following Jurgen Klopp’s announcement of his departure from Liverpool at the end of the season, speculation about potential successors has been rife, and De Zerbi sees himself thrown into the mix.
Minto shared his thoughts on whether De Zerbi could find himself managing Liverpool or City in the future, expressing an opinion on where the Italian manager might stand better suited after Brighton lost 4-0 to Luton Town last week [Their latest result was a 4-1 win over Crystal Palace] :
Here is what Minto remarked during a recent episode of Premier League All Access:
“But in terms of De Zerbi, just because they lost 4-0, for me, it doesn’t mean that he wouldn’t be a candidate for Liverpool, although I actually think he’d suit Manchester City better than Liverpool.”
RDZ at L4?
Minto’s analysis stems from the observation that De Zerbi’s possession-based attacking style of play might align more with Manchester City’s ethos. Despite Brighton’s recent 4-0 loss to Luton Town, Minto suggests that it shouldn’t discount De Zerbi as a potential candidate for Liverpool to replace Jurgen Klopp.
Since taking charge at Brighton in September 2022, the 44-year-old has overseen 70 matches in all competitions. Known for his possession-oriented attacking approach, De Zerbi has received praise for Brighton’s tactical setup. During this period, Brighton have won 33, drawn 16, and lost 21 matches, resulting in a points-per-match average of 1.64.
However, replacing the character and persona of a figure like Klopp is an intricate challenge that goes beyond tactics and formations. Klopp’s infectious enthusiasm on the touchline, his emotional connection with players and fans, and his unwavering belief in the club’s values have become synonymous with Liverpool’s identity.
Jurgen Klopp’s impact goes beyond the silverware he brought to Anfield. It’s about the collective belief he instilled in the squad, the ability to turn doubters into believers, and the sense of unity he fostered among players and supporters alike. His charismatic touchline celebrations, heartfelt interviews, and genuine love for the game have created a narrative that extends far beyond the football pitch.

As managerial speculation continues, opinions on potential candidates vary. Minto’s perspective adds an interesting angle to the discussion, contemplating the suitability of De Zerbi for either Liverpool or Manchester City. As Liverpool navigate the managerial transition, the focus should not solely be on the tactical blueprint but also on finding a leader who understands and embraces the ethos Klopp cultivated.
