Man City manager Pep Guardiola says Liverpool are favourites to win the league title
Pep Guardiola mocks Carabao Cup after the Liverpool victory, further showing that the club lives rent-free in his head. The Manchester City boss mocked the stature of the Carabao Cup despite taking it seriously enough to win four times.
Liverpool have been a consistent challenger under Jurgen Klopp during Guardiola’s dominant domestic reign as a Man City manager. Many football fans rightfully believe that without Liverpool City would have enjoyed a monopoly in trophies during the last decade.
Under Guardiola, the Citizens have won three back-to-back Premier League and five in total. Liverpool are the only team that won the Premier League apart from Man City since the 2017-18 season.
Despite the humongous difference in resources between the two clubs, Klopp’s Liverpool has regularly pushed the Spanish legend. Guardiola has enjoyed a massive wage and transfer budget, signing players despite genuine concern about financial breaches.
Man City are currently facing 115 charges for financial breaches, the outcome of which remains pending. The Breaches are throughout 14 seasons from the start of the 20019-2010 campaign. These breaches include claims over financial reporting and a lack of cooperation with the Premier League’s investigation.
Speaking to the press (h/t Fabrizio Romano’s official X account), Guardiola talked about the lack of importance of the Carabao Cup.
“I still remember when I arrived at City, Brian Kidd told me: Carabao Cup, don’t pay attention! Play young players, nobody cares… Sir Alex Ferguson was always, eugh it doesn’t matter. Phwoar, I don’t know what happened in the last years!”.
Guardiola has been vocal about the poor fanbase that Man City possess compared to other top clubs. Additionally, the Citizens have an issue with the lack of respect that the media and football community have shown towards their achievements.
In their defence, the financial breaches taint any victory they have enjoyed which includes the last season’s treble. Given the financial power they’ve enjoyed in acquiring their assets, the club somewhat expects the victories.
Guardiola’s jealousy is the product of the slow growth in stature of the Manchester club despite their era of dominance. The footballing community still respects the Spaniard’s accomplishments with Barcelona for their fairness and influence in the sport. Regarding the Carabao Cup, every competition deserves respect, and each club possesses the power to forfeit if they choose.
