Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp probably does not want his son’s former club to manage the Reds. He reckons Steven Gerrard should be the next Liverpool manager following in the footsteps of outgoing manager Jurgen Klopp, who announced his decision to depart the Reds earlier this season.
Yes, Gerrard may bleed Liverpool red, and his exploits on the pitch are etched into the club’s folklore. But let’s not forget that managing a football team is a different beast altogether. Gerrard’s stint at Aston Villa, while not an unmitigated disaster, was hardly a resounding success. It’s a stark reminder that managing a Premier League club, especially one of Liverpool’s stature, requires more than just passion and pedigree.
may have the raw talent and the burning desire to succeed, but he’s still relatively inexperienced when it comes to top-flight management. A league title in Scotland plus a tough spell in Birmingham followed by management in Saudi Arabia is not enough for the Reds to get their biggest legend back to Anfield.Nevertheless, here is what Redknapp had to say via ECHO:
“I’m going to say somebody and people are going to think that I’m off my head, but I would give it to Steven Gerrard.
“I know people will say that he was a failure at Aston Villa and it didn’t go great there, but he’s a Liverpool man and was an incredible player for them. He’s got passion for the game and I used to listen to him speak when he was at Rangers and always thought he was going to be top drawer. I would love to see him manage Liverpool.”
There’s a learning curve that all aspiring managers must endure, and Gerrard is no exception. He’ll need to prove himself at the biggest stages, to show that he can handle the pressure, expectations, and relentless scrutiny that comes with the job.
And let’s not forget that there are other candidates in the running, contenders with their own claims to the throne. Take Xabi Alonso, for example. The former Liverpool midfield maestro has been absolutely amazing at Bayer Leverkusen, impressing with his tactical acumen and astute man-management skills. Alonso may lack Gerrard’s emotional connection to the club, but he is still a former player and also makes up for it with his tactical nous and managerial pedigree.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Redknapp’s endorsement is just the opening run in what’s sure to be a long partnership. After all, choosing Liverpool’s next manager is no small task; it’s a decision that will shape the club’s destiny for years to come.
So as we ponder the possibilities, let’s not lose sight of what truly matters – the passion, the dedication, the unwavering belief in the Liverpool way. Whether it’s Gerrard or someone else at the helm, one thing’s for certain: the Reds are in good hands thanks to the strong foundations laid by Jurgen Klopp. As long as they stay true to their roots, as long as they embrace the spirit of adventure and innovation that has defined them for generations, the future is bright at Anfield.
