Ruben Amorim tight lipped when quizzed about liverpool rumours

Liverpool eyeing Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim: Can he lead the Reds to success?

Liverpool has been heavily linked with a move for Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim off late.

After Jurgen Klopp called it a day to his eight-and-a-half-year stay at the club, the Merseyside Reds have been linked with multiple managers to take charge of the club in the summer. Former Liverpool icon Xavi Alonso had been among the names linked with a move to the club until he reassured his future at Bayern Leverkusen earlier this week.

This has left Michael Edward and Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s new sporting director, looking at the list of potential candidates, which includes Sporting Lisbon boss Amorim.

Ruben Amorim is considered the favourite to replace Jurgen Klopp as of now.

Following Sporting CP’s win against Estrela Amadora on Friday, the 39-year-old was quizzed about his links to Liverpool, to which he gave a rather tightly-lipped answer.

He said (via. Daily Star),

“Right now, I’m focused on sports. I’m very proud to be Sporting’s coach. We’re focused on winning titles. You’ll see in the end. I have a contract, and I’m very happy here. That’s the most important thing, more than contracts. I’m very happy here. The focus is on beating Benfica in the Portuguese Cup.”

Ruben Amorim has a release clause in his contract with Sporting CP, per Mirror, Liverpool can activate a £12.8 million release clause to land the 39-year-old’s services. The release clause is to drop to £8.5 million in 2025, a figure that Sporting Lisbon initially paid to Braga to land Amorim’s services.

His tight-lipped reply doesn’t have much to read between the lines, only the fact that he is regarded favourite among the papers to lead Liverpool is keeping the fans afloat.

Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha, who played under Ruben Amorim was quizzed about Amorim’s links with Liverpool and his potential if he were to take up the offer to move to Anfield.

In an interview with O Jogo, when asked if Amorim could handle the strain of being the manager at Liverpool, the Fulham star responded:

“Yes, of course, although the pressure is different. When you coach a big Portuguese club, you have pressure from the fans and the size of the club itself, which forces you to win. When you coach Liverpool, you have pressure from the fans, the club and the whole world. The way it is developing, I think it will be a matter of time.”

Ruben Amorim has won Primeira Liga twice while guiding the club to the title with only one loss in the 2020–21 season. His credentials boast potential to succeed at Liverpool, though it is to be seen whether the Reds pay his release clause in the summer.
