Fabrizio Romano discusses top two contenders after Xabi Alonso to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool
Fabrizio Romano believes that Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim is the favorite over Brighton’s Roberto de Zerbi in the hunt to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager.
Klopp announced in January that this would be his last season as Liverpool head coach. He is under contract until 2026 but he is leaving in the summer as he requires a break and will take a sabbatical.
Since then, Xabi Alonso has been the favorite to replace Klopp given the history he has with the Reds, as he was a star midfielder for the club. But recently, he committed his future to his current club, Bayer Leverkusen.
Next favorites for Klopp replacement
After Xabi Alonso’s decision, Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi have emerged as the leading candidates in the race for the Reds’ hot seat.
Following Liverpool’s 2-1 victory against Brighton on Sunday, Klopp praised Seagulls boss De Zerbi, acknowledging the challenge he poses whenever their teams face off.
While Klopp’s comments may hint at his approval of De Zerbi as his successor, it remains unclear. However, according to Romano, Amorim appears to be the frontrunner to take over at Liverpool for now.
Discussing the Liverpool manager situation, Romano said via his Daily Briefing:
“Despite the links with De Zerbi as Klopp’s successor, I keep repeating my position on that – I’m told that Ruben Amorim is the favorite option for now. De Zerbi has been on the list for Liverpool for some time as well, but there’s still no development so far.”
De Zerbi has undoubtedly proven himself worthy of a significant role, and it will be intriguing to see how he could potentially transform this Liverpool team. However, he also presents a compelling option for a managerial position at Bayern Munich, especially after their recent struggles.
While the Brighton boss remains on the list of potential replacements for Klopp, there have been no official links between him and Liverpool for the managerial position thus far. On the other hand, Amorim has acknowledged the interest without giving much away.

Jurgen Klopp’s departure from Liverpool will leave a significant void that will be challenging for any future head coach to fill. Klopp’s legacy at the club, both in terms of on-field success and his charismatic leadership style, will be difficult to replicate.
The appointment of Klopp’s successor will be a crucial decision for Liverpool, as the new manager will need to not only maintain the club’s competitive edge but also uphold the values and ethos instilled by Klopp during his tenure.
