Liverpool owners FSG closing in on yet another key backroom appointment

Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) wants to appoint Benfica technical director Pedro Marques to their new-look football structure.

Liverpool owners, Fenway Sports Group, are close to recruiting (h/t Liverpool Echo) Benfica technical director Pedro Marques as part of their new football operation. Marques could be a major pillar in FSG’s multi-club reorganization, led by football operations chief Michael Edwards.

According to The Athletic last month, FSG will seek to utilize his expertise to attract global talent. How impactful it will be as FSG drift towards a multi club model remains to be seen.

While the final job title has yet to be filled, the Portuguese is believed to be in charge of player development and pathways, similar to Liverpool’s departed elite development coach Vitor Matos.

Pedro Marques History

Marques is known to Liverpool following the club’s deal to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica in the summer of 2022. He also has ties to former Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward.

The Portuguese previously worked as a first-team performance analyst for Manchester City, while Ward was a scout there. Marques eventually transitioned to a coaching and analysis lead position for City Football Group (CFG)—the multi-club model.

The hiring of Marques follows Michael Edwards’ return to FSG

as CEO of football. He oversees football operations, while Richard Hughes will become Liverpool’s new sporting director at the end of the season.

The return of Edwards to FSG and Liverpool’s hire of Bournemouth’s technical director, Hughes, coincide with substantial off-field changes at Anfield. Following the announcement in January that manager Jurgen Klopp would leave the club at the conclusion of the season.

The focus is now on naming Klopp’s replacement, with Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim emerging as a favorite over Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi after Xabi Alonso chose to stay at Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool has to work hard to fill the huge void that Klopp will leave after his departure.
