Liverpool face increased competition for rising Iberian star

Liverpool target Joao Neves continues to attract interest from more top European clubs as summer draws near

Liverpool are facing more competition for Benfica star Joao Neves as his rising reputation attracts more top European clubs. Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are also the top clubs with concrete interest in him.

Neves is enjoying an outstanding season with Benfica as they continue to chase Sporting CP for the Liga Portugal title. The 19-year-old’s performances have already earned him a call-up to the Portugal national team and praise from his several peers.

The Portugal international has played as dominantly as a defensive midfielder but also featured as a central midfielder and right midfielder. He has shown his all-round ability to contribute in both the defensive and the offensive phases of the game.

The 19-year-old has a short stature at 1.74 metres but the deceptive strength to challenge any opponent in duels. His low centre of gravity allows great balance alongside strong close control and the ability to wiggle out of tight spaces.

Neves is always available to support his teammates on possession with technical qualities to distribute accurate passes and hold possession. He has shown maturity and great decision-making at a young age but he has a lot of room for improvement.

The Portugal international has shown his willingness to work hard for his team while aggressively doing his defensive duties. He reads the opposition’s play well and applies his positioning to make good tackling and interceptions.

The 19-year-old has made 47 appearances in all competition for Benfica, contributing with three goals and two assists this season. Liverpool, along with numerous other clubs, are showing interest in Neves and planning to secure him with a long-term vision, as reported by Fichajes.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp revamped the midfield last summer which has allowed them to challenge for multiple trophies. Despite the injury crisis, the midfield department remained secure due to the great depth and quality of players at Liverpool.

Neves fits the profile that the Reds would normally desire but he is not a necessity currently and Liverpool does not spend big unless it is necessary. Furthermore, Benfica have a reputation for extracting huge sums for their top young assets and the 19-year-old will cost plenty.
