Liverpool superstar Virgil Van Dijk shows his true colours, backing up Jarell Quansah on his error in the Liverpool vs United clash

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has told teammate Jarell Quansah not to linger on the error that resulted in Manchester United’s first goal in Sunday’s meeting.

The two Premier League titans faced off at Old Trafford, with Jurgen Klopp‘s side knowing a win would lift them to the top of the standings. Despite taking an early lead with a Luis Díaz goal, Liverpool only managed to draw the game 2-2.

from Mohamed Salah levelled the scores. United’s first goal was a long-range shot by their captain off a misdirected pass from Quansah.

Liverpool captain’s take on the situation

Fernandes caught goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher off guard as the Anfield Academy graduate made an inaccurate sideways pass. However, Van Dijk explains in his post-match statement to not blame Quansah for the error.

In a chat with the BBC MOTD (h/t Mirror), when asked if there would be any effect on Quansah due to his mistake, the Dutchman responded:

 “He shouldn’t. Mistakes happen in football — everyone who has a career in football makes mistakes, you can only learn from it.”

Van Dijk also emphasized the team’s disappointment at what they see as a squandered opportunity, saying:

 “It feels Like a loss, it is our fault again.

“We had so many chances and we should finish the game off. Unfortunately the individual mistake that happened with the equalizer and we had so much time to put it right, but we were in a rush. Still after being 2-1 down we created so much.”

Liverpool remains second in the Premier League table, level on points with Arsenal but with a significantly inferior goal difference. Holders Manchester City are just a point behind in third.

Quansah should not dwell on his mistakes for too long. After all, his colleagues farther up the pitch should have had the game very much wrapped up by now, and if they had seized their chances, that blunder might not have mattered as much.

To his credit, the error did not appear to affect Quansah much, as he continued to perform excellently for the rest of the match. The youngster has had an excellent season, and a single misstep should not be his defining factor.
