German journo confirms verbal agreement for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool successor

Florian Plettenberg reveals that Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement with Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim

Journalist Florian Plettenberg has announced that Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement with Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim. In January, current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp announced that he was leaving the club after the end of this season.

His early announcement allowed the Reds to restructure their management and implement a succession plan to secure the future. Liverpool’s owner FSG appointed Michael Edwards to oversee all the football operations of the club on their behalf.

The Reds appointed Bournemouth’s technical director Richard Hughes as their new sporting director from the next season onwards. Edwards and Hughes are responsible for finding a worthy successor for Klopp, beloved by the Liverpool fans around the globe.

Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim has attracted interest from several top European club including Liverpool.

Liverpool had two firm favourites to succeed Klopp in Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso and Sporting CP manager Amorim. However, Xabi announced that he is staying at Leverkusen and continuing his work there, leaving Amorim as the firm favourite.

Plettenberg used his official X account to announce that Amorim has a verbal agreement with Liverpool to become the next manager. Once the final negotiation with Sporting CP concludes, the 39-year-old can sign a contract until 2027.

The Reds are currently still negotiating with the Portuguese club and Plettenberg warned that the deal can still fall through. The Portuguese attracted interest from Chelsea and Bayern Munich as well, proving the big reputation he already has in Europe.

Sporting CP appointed Amorim as their manager during the latter stage of their 2019-20 season after years of struggle. The 39-year-old immediately guided the club to their first Liga Portugal title in 19 years during the 2020-21 season.
