The 21-year-old has played 44 games for the Reds this season, but he has only started six Premier League games, appearing in a full match only twice.
The skilled Liverpool midfielder is highly hoping to be in the starting XI for Thursday’s Europa League quarterfinal first leg against Atalanta. A youngster like Elliott needs ample game time to improve.
Elliott spoke to the club media at this afternoon’s press conference when asked about his role in Jurgen Klopp’s team:
“Quite frankly, I want to be starting games, I want to be a player walking out rather than coming on – it doesn’t mean I’m not grateful for coming on the pitch, I’m very grateful for every opportunity I get in a Liverpool shirt.”
“For me it’s just about kicking on for myself and kind of cementing my spot in the team – and I’ll do everything I can to do that.”
“I’m young but I’m not a kid anymore, I’m a man, I’m growing up quickly and I feel like I need to take responsibility into my own hands. If that means me knocking on the gaffer’s door, then it’s going to have to happen.”
Elliott has voiced his frustration, having patiently waited for an opportunity to start but often finding himself on the bench. Perhaps it’s time for the youngster to step up and take on more responsibilities.
Despite his limited playing time, the 21-year-old made a significant impact as a substitute in the match against United, which ended in a 2-2 draw. He earned the penalty that Mohamed Salah converted, ultimately salvaging a point for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
With his increasing pedigree and influence, there’s a growing sense that Elliott could potentially play a more prominent role, especially as Liverpool intensifies its push for a treble.
Jurgen Klopp, the legendary boss of Liverpool, announced his departure from the club at the end of the summer. As his squad aims to achieve success on all fronts and bid farewell to their manager in style, Elliott’s role in the team’s aspirations could become even more crucial.
The Europa League has been a challenging trophy for Klopp during his tenure as manager. Elliott expressed that Liverpool will be doing “everything we can” to ensure that this issue is addressed before the German bows out at the end of the season.
