Arne Slot plotting Eredivisie double raid as Liverpool move awaits

Wieffer and Geertruida could move to Liverpool alongside Arne Slot

Ahead of Jürgen Klopp‘s departure at the end of the ongoing season, Liverpool have set their eyes on Arne Slot to replace the outgoing German from next season onwards.

The 45-year-old Dutchman has been receiving plaudits ever since arriving at Dutch side Feyenoord three years ago and is considered to soon be confirmed as Klopp’s successor.

With Slot’s arrival imminent, Liverpool are looking to raid his soon-to-be-former club by eyeing summer moves for Mats Wieffer and Lutsharel Geertruida, as reported by Football Insider.

Capable of playing multiple roles at the back, the two young Netherlands internationals have been key assets of Slot’s title winning campaigns at Feyenoord, having won the Eredivisie last year and the KNVB Cup this year.

Feyenoord are set to end the current season second in the league, as Slot takes his last bow at De Kuip.

Liverpool’s defensive midfield requires long-term solutions

Last summer, while Liverpool were looking to bolster their midfield, they were not anticipating to lose most of their first-team options in one fell swoop, which is exactly what happened as Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keïta, and James Milner all left for pastures anew.

Given the departures, and the chronic unavailability of Thiago, it is remarkable that Liverpool have gone on to have the season they have with a completely overhauled midfield, however anti-climactic it may seem that they are ending the season with just the Carabao Cup.

In their midfield overhaul, they found an effective and inexpensive solution in Wataru Endō, but there’s no denying that the Japan international, now 31, is only a short-term answer and the Reds need a long-term fix.

Which is where Wieffer and Geertruida come in. In eyeing players their new manager has closely worked with, Liverpool are looking at reinforcing crucial positions at the back the right way.
