Liverpool star Caoimhin Kelleher outlines the key moment that shaped his journey as a goalkeeper
According to The Athletic via the club’s official website, Liverpool star Caoimhin Kelleher had a curious twist of fate that led him to become a goalkeeper. Since his arrival at Anfield in 2015, Kelleher has experienced his busiest season yet.
In the 2023-24 season, Kelleher served as the team’s primary goalkeeper for the Carabao Cup and Europa League matches. Additionally, he made 10 appearances in the Premier League when Alisson Becker was injured. In total, Kelleher made 26 appearances throughout the season, including securing a clean sheet at Wembley to help Liverpool win the Carabao Cup for the second time.
As the starting goalkeeper in two major finals, Kelleher has written his name into Anfield folklore. However, it did not appear to be the case back at Ringmahon Rangers when he started off his footballing career.
This is because the Irishman was then earning his stripes as a striker. However, when the team’s goalkeeper left, Kelleher stepped into the role, paving the way for what has since become a stellar career between the sticks. It is funny how it all worked out and Kelleher
“I do think about it sometimes – how it was an absolute stroke of fortune the way it all panned out,”
Kelleher saw this as a significant opportunity to showcase his abilities and prove himself at the highest level. He believes he demonstrated that he is capable of performing in the Premier League and found satisfaction in proving his worth to others.
As Liverpool prepares for a new era under incoming manager Arne Slot, who will take over from Jürgen Klopp on June 1, changes are also occurring within the goalkeeping division. Longstanding coach John Achterberg and assistant Jack Robinson are parting ways with the Reds.
This transition marks a new chapter for the goalkeeping roster at Anfield, and Kelleher has firmly showcased that he can be counted on as a regular. However, with Alisson Becker already in the squad, it remains to be seen what Kelleher’s plans are for the summer.

Kelleher has already proven himself to be a reliable presence between the sticks. Starring in two Wembley finals is no mean feat and the 25-year-old certainly rose to the occasion. Whether he will continue on as Alisson’s deputy at Anfield remains to be seen. Should he leave, the Reds will struggle to bring in a backup goalie of the same calibre and reliability.
