Liverpool look to exploit Rayan Cherki’s contract situation by brokering a cut-price transfer

Fichajes (citing French outlet Sports Zone) has reported that Liverpool are expected to be in the running for Olympique Lyon’s versatile youngster Rayan Cherki in the summer transfer window but will face competition from Tottenham Hotspur.

Cherki has been one of the best young talents in Ligue 1 for a number of years, but at the back of a contract that expires in June 2025, he has been tipped to move abroad.

Lyon would be obligated to sell him this summer to avoid losing him as a free agent next year, and Liverpool are hoping to leverage the final season of his deal in their favour by pursuing a discounted transfer for Cherki.

He is valued at €25 million on Transfermarkt, Cherki scored once and assisted six times in 33 league appearances in the recently concluded campaign.

The 20-year-old is capable of playing as a midfielder and winger, which will particularly attract the Reds. Cherki’s profile could help them successfully replace Thiago Alcantara in midfield, whereas they are also beginning to plan for life after Mohamed Salah, with the Frenchman being a suitable solution.

Tottenham would also be attracted by Cherki’s multidimensional characteristics and want to add him to increase competition for James Maddison’s position, but the player could be more inclined towards signing for Liverpool, who have sealed a Champions League spot for next season.

Arne Slot’s side is yet to make any formal contact for Cherki’s signing but will look to lower the Lyon star’s transfer fee as much as they possibly can. It remains to be seen how much Liverpool are ready to spend on the Frenchman, especially with the prospect of signing him as a free agent in 2025 very much on the cards.
