Liverpool are ready to sanction a loan deal for Lewis Koumas this summer

Lewis Koumas was one of the Academy stars to be handed their first big break at Liverpool in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at Anfield. The 18-year-old made the most of his opportunities and even scored his first senior goal in the 3-0 win over Southampton in the FA Cup tie at Anfield.

However, he is unlikely to get more playing time in 2024-25 and can at best hope to settle for minutes in cup competitions. However, this could impede his development, something that Liverpool will be keen to avoid. It thus comes as no surprise that the Reds are willing to sanction a summer exit, on loan.

According to Paul Joyce on X, Koumas is attracting attention from Championship side Stoke City. The Potters will be keen to return to the Premier League, and should Koumas aid them in doing so, could see his standing at Anfield enhanced significantly.

Koumas arrived at Anfield from Tranmere Rovers in 2016 and has since made an impact for the club’s U-18 and U-21 sides. The 18-year-old has eight goals and four assists in just 15 Premier League 2 appearances for the Reds, signifying his potential and impact.

He also has two senior caps for Wales but is yet to break his international duck at the senior level. The youngster was part of the young Reds side that won the 2024 Carabao Cup, beating free-spending Chelsea in the final at Wembley. A core of young Liverpool talents became household names that night, and Koumas was one of them.

Son of former Wales star Jason Koumas, the 18-year-old has football pedigree to boot. A striker, he is also capable of playing anywhere along the frontline. Koumas has also done a decent job in midfield when needed, highlighting his versatility and adaptability.

At 18, he has the best years of his career yet to come and the opportunity to secure regular game time, even if it is in the Championship is not to be sniffed at. Liverpool, for their part, appear to rate the player and are keen to have him tied down to a new deal, securing his future at Anfield for years to come.

Koumas has the ability to follow in his father’s footsteps but still needs to develop his game before he meets the standards expected of a Liverpool first-XI star. A stint in the Championship will not be easy but it could very well turn out to be the forge that kindles the teenager as a serious talent, one not to be sniffed at. Hopefully, he returns a year later, ready to contribute at Liverpool.
