Timo Werner ready to make the move to Liverpool
According to Sky Sports (h/t Express), Bundesliga superstar Timo Werner is ready to make a move to Liverpool.
It was only a matter of time considering his public flirtations with the club. Werner had earlier commented on his admiration for Jurgen Klopp’s team and stated it was an honour to be linked with them.
The 23-year-old has a release clause around £52million, a clause that expires on June 15. According to the report, Liverpool are willing to wait rather than trigger the buyout.
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought footballing operations to a halt and frozen various revenue streams. Taking the situation under stock, Liverpool has already put all transfer business on hold while they combat the coronavirus crisis.
There is a feeling amongst clubs that the market will be badly affected by the lack of football with values set to plummet. There is also the risk that Leipzig may choose to play hardball once June 15 passes and the window opens. Werner is contracted at the Red Bull Arena until 2023 giving the Germans enough leeway to hold their own.
The same was also suggested by Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche, who believes the club stands in good stead when it comes to keeping Werner. His statement is based on the assumption that the market may struggle to operate when normality resumes.
The prolific forward has lit up the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig, scoring 27 goals and providing 12 assists in 36 appearances this season.
The addition of Werner will give Klopp a number of options. We have been over-reliant on our front three for goals, with the backup options too inconsistent to be trusted.
