Lazio come back to Liverpool for Xherdan Shaqiri

Sport Witness cite Corriere Dello Sport (h/t Liverpool Echo) claim that Lazio are interested in Liverpool forward Xherdan Shaqiri. However, Lazio are short of funds and are hoping that the 29-year-old’s desire to leave Liverpool will work for them.

The report adds that the player met with Liverpool’s management and asked to be let go. Thus, the club has decided to let Shaqiri leave at ‘almost zero cost’. Even though the Swiss star’s contract runs out in 2023, the Merseyside club are happy to offload Shaqiri’s wages off their books. The situation looks to satisfy all the parties involved.

Should Liverpool let Shaqiri leave?

The Swiss international showed his quality during the UEFA Euro 2020. The player scored 3 goals and 1 assist in his nation’s amazing run in the tournament. He showed why he could be too good to warm the bench.

Despite Firmino and Mane misfiring last season, Shaqiri only made 14 appearances in the league.

Even in the 2019/20 season Shaqiri never really got a run of games. Jurgen Klopp even sympathised with the player’s situation and made an apology. The manager apologised to the player after giving him his first start in seven months.

Liverpool have enough depth without Shaqiri. Their current core includes the likes of Salah, Mane, Jota, Minamino, Firmino and Origi. However, the Reds need to be careful as both Mane and Salah will be off for international duty in January.
