Liverpool identify 24-year-old title-winning midfield star as Wijnaldum replacement

Transfer News: Liverpool eyeing Nicolo Barella to replace Wijnaldum

According to transfer news from Calciomercato (h/t Mirror), Liverpool have identified Nicolo Barella as a potential replacement for Gini Wijnaldum. The Dutchman left for PSG after his contract expired. However, Liverpool are looking for replacements with Barella being one of the names.

Liverpool lost an important part of their midfield when Wijnaldum ran down his deal and finally left the club this season. His performances in the Euros highlighted the fact that he will very likely be missed. Unless of course, Liverpool goes after another name that impressed during the tournament.

As Italy wrapped up a flawless run to lifting the trophy, there were many players who impressed. Nicolo Barella was one such star who lit up the side with his lively performances games. He added quite some energy into the side and even managed to get on the score sheet against Belgium.

Now, it has come to light that Barella is indeed a target for Liverpool and is being lined up as a replacement for Wijnaldum. However, they are not the only side after him as Manchester United have also taken an interest in the Inter Milan midfielder who won the Serie A last season.

It’s not hard to see why the 24-year-old has been identified as a possible replacement for Wijnaldum. Both players are energetic presences in the midfield and can chip in with vital goals. Barella represents a good long term investment given that he is still just 24 and has his prime years ahead of him.
