Transfer News: Liverpool target Cody Gakpo gives clear verdict on his PSV Eindhoven future
Speaking to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool transfer target Cody Gakpo claimed that he will give due consideration to all options this summer before making any decision.
The 23-year-old winger has caught the attention of some of Europe’s biggest teams this season with his performances. Manchester United, Manchester City, and Arsenal are three other teams alongside Liverpool to express an interest in signing him.
And according to Gakpo himself, he will make a decision this summer after considering all options available to him. Staying for another year at his current club is also a possibility.
“Anything can happen this summer. I will now calmly compare all the options and see what is best for me. Staying another year is also an option.”
He then claimed that he has one eye on the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year, which is why he will take playing time into consideration as well. If he does make the team, he will join Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk on the grandest stage of international football later this year.
“It would be a shame if I went somewhere where I wouldn’t get a job at all and I could miss the World Cup. I’ll keep that in mind.”
So, can he be a player that Jurgen Klopp slots right away in his team so that he sees regular action and catches Louis van Gaal’s eyes? Perhaps not, given the wingers at our disposal currently.
Mohamed Salah has made the right flank his own while Luis Diaz is a sensation down the left-hand side. It is extremely hard to imagine both of these players being relegated to the bench after the season they’ve just had.
Sadio Mane has played as a centre-forward at times while Roberto Firmino has only recently made his return from injury. Then again, there is Takumi Minamino and Diogo Jota vying for minutes.
For the Reds, signing Gakpo makes sense. He is young, versatile enough to play across the forward line, and has shown his mettle in the Eredivisie. But if the player wants regular playing time right away, it seems tough that he can get it at Liverpool.

Unless one of our main men up front leaves, it is hard to see the PSV youth product break into our set-up right away. With 21 goals and 15 assists in 47 games across all competitions this season, he is a player who knows where the goal is. Whether Jurgen Klopp and co can convince him to make the switch to Anfield remains to be seen.
