Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk opens up on the upcoming FIFA World Cup
According to The Independent, Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk has opened up about taking part in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
The Dutchman has arguably been the best centre-back in world football over the last few years. However, a late bloomer, he is yet to experience the action at world football’s premier events. Currently 31, this could prove to be his best opportunity to leave a mark on the international stage.
The Netherlands failed to qualify for the showpiece event in 2018 and Van Dijk missed out on the 2020 Euros thanks to injury. To say that the 31-year-old is looking forward to travelling to Qatar would be an understatement.
Van Dijk is unlikely to hold back and play it safe in the coming months to ensure he is ready for the World Cup. Liverpool fans can rest assured that the 31-year-old will give his best in the upcoming games.
The defender is not worried about getting injured and is instead keen to have match fitness on his side. Hopefully, there will not be any unpleasant surprises for him or Liverpool.
“I want to go but to be ready, in my opinion, is not to focus on hopefully not getting injured, it is just to keep playing, get fit, stay fit and get in a good moment.”
Van Dijk is set to represent the Oranje in the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Poland and Belgium. The 31-year-old has admitted that his focus is on what is in front of him right now rather than looking too far into the future. After all, one step at a time.
“For me it is two games against Poland and Belgium and then it is Brighton, so that will be the focus. I’m not focusing on what is happening in November.”

Van Dijk’s poor start to the season has seen rival fans question his status as one of the top dogs in world football. The upcoming months serve as an excellent platform for the Dutchman to prove them wrong and return to his best. Leading the Oranje to a memorable World Cup run will certainly cement his name further in footballing folklore.
