Virgil van Dijk reflects back on Liverpool’s lucky escape against Leicester City
There would hardly be any harsher critics of Liverpool than the players themselves. Nobody understands better what one could do in their positions than the players who stood there in the moment, and that is something most players would agree with.
The players would know that they certainly were not at their best against Leicester even though the Reds got all three points because of two own goals from Wout Faes. Nevertheless, it is important to learn and move on rather than thinking about the same thing over and over repeatedly.
In phases, Liverpool were excellent, and in phases, not at their best. That is precisely what the Reds’ defender Virgil van Dijk spoke about in his post-game conference and hopefully, there was a lot to learn from this game for the squad.
Speaking to Sky Sports via BBC, here is what VVD said about the game and how the Reds could have been much better in their approach against a counter-attacking side like Leicester:
“At times, I thought we were poor today. It’s a cliche but it’s important to get the three points and win. We tried to get in the game but we weren’t good enough and we know that. We won, which is positive, but there are plenty of things we have to improve on.”
Lucky break for the Reds!
Liverpool do not have a lot of time on their hands as after the World Cup, the fixtures are a tad bit more congested than they used to be and the Reds will be on the bounce sooner than expected. They will face Brentford away on the 2nd of January, marking their first game of 2023.
However, looking at the positives, Liverpool continue their four-match winning streak in the league, and long may it continue. The Reds have enough time to integrate new acquisition Cody Gakpo into the side, and hopefully, he makes his debut soon as well.
For sure, Jurgen Klopp will have a lot of conversations with the squad about the poor execution of their tactics against Leicester, and would hope to see his boys bounce back sooner than later as it is important for the Reds to find themselves to secure a top-four finish.

Not an extremely worrisome result for the Reds as it was a win at the end of the day. Just that it should have been much more composed and in control of the situation rather than receiving gifts from the opposition itself.
