Andrew Robertson warns Liverpool to improve away form to challenge for titles
Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson has warned Liverpool to improve their away form if they are to challenge for titles in the future.
The Reds have been shambolic in away games in the league this season. Out of the 15 league games played away from Anfield, they have won only three and lost eight while scoring only 14 and conceding 24 goals (Whoscored).
Last season, Jurgen Klopp’s men lost a total of two league games out of 38. The stark contrast in performances in space of a few months is staggering, to say the least.
Robertson has admitted that the team let themselves down in away games this season. Here’s what he said (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“We’ve struggled away from home, obviously. If we could put our finger on it, we’d have fixed it before now and it’s just about trying to give our best performance every week and that’s always not been possible this season.
“Away from home, results haven’t been great. From now till the end of the season, we need to try and put that right and next season, we’re going to need to fix that if we want to be competing for anything because you need to pick up points on the road – and that’s where we’ve let ourselves down massively this year.”
We have seen Liverpool lose away to Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers this season. All those teams are currently fighting to survive relegation.
Keeping those things in mind, it was not a surprise that they got thumped at Manchester City and came away with a lucky point against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. If the Blues had been in any sort of good game, they might have won that game by two or three goals easily.
After the Chelsea game, it was baffling to hear Klopp say that the clean sheet and a point against Chelsea was a step forward. Either he saw a different game or is just bluffing in front of the media.

Coming back to what Robertson said, he is 100% right. While successful teams don’t lose at home, they constantly pick wins away from home to keep the momentum going in the season. Everyone has to play 19 home and 19 away games in the league. So, one cannot just focus on winning the home games and leave the latter in hope.
