Liverpool restart their search for a defensive midfielder by targeting Fulham star Joao Palhinha

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool rekindle their interest in signing Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha but are wary of his £60m price tag.

With just about two weeks to go before this transfer window shuts, the Reds are scrambling around to sign a defensive midfielder after missing out on Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo to Chelsea.

The club posted their interest in signing Palhinha earlier in the window, but it was revealed that Fulham won’t let the Portugal international go after just one season at Craven Cottage.

But, as we all know in the market, every player has a price. The London-based club would demand something in the region of £60m to let go of the former Sporting Lisbon midfielder.

The 28-year-old, who is currently recovering from a shoulder injury suffered in pre-season, had an exceptional first year in the Premier League.

He showed robustness in his game which is required if asked to play the defensive midfield role. In a way, he has the tools to become an ideal number six for Liverpool.

With time running out, the Reds cannot afford to negotiate the price of a player down before making a move. In making a failed attempt to sign Caicedo for £111m, they have exposed their financial might in the market.

Now, every possible selling club knows that Liverpool are desperate for a defensive midfielder and have the money to flex when required.

Jurgen Klopp needs to be backed adequately before this window is closed. If not, then expect another season of tumultuous performances with no consistency.

The club cannot afford to waste seasons when the German is in charge. The last thing they would want to do is agitate him and force his hand to lower the team’s expectations.
