Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag wanted Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch at Old Trafford

The Ajax Academy is one of the best in the world. In recent years, the likes of Christian Eriksen, Frenkie de Jong, Ryan Gravenberch, Jurrien Timber and Matthijs de Ligt among others have gone on to make their mark from the academy at Amsterdam to the biggest clubs in the world. Liverpool have also had a number of players from their academy including the likes of Ryan Babel, and more recently, Gravenberch, who made the move to the Reds from Bayern Munich earlier this summer.

However, recent revelations come to the fore that Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag wanted to sign Gravenberch before he eventually made his move to Merseyside. Following United’s interest in Frenkie de Jong ending up nowhere thanks to Barcelona not wanting to part ways with him, Ten Hag wanted to bring on board Gravenberch given he was the closest, in terms of potential attributes.

De Jong, at the peak of his abilities as a footballer, was guaranteed to come at a premium cost adding to his importance within the Barcelona squad as well. Keeping that in mind, it is understandable why Ten Hag eyed Gravenberch as a potential transfer target. Now that he has neither, it will be interesting to see how Manchester United solve their midfield issues.

The Independent discusses how Ten Hag wanted Ryan instead of De Jong. Co-incidentally, De Jong was also among Liverpool’s transfer targets but the financial implications of a potential deal meant Liverpool saw themselves out of the race to sign him.

Gravenberch and Frenkie

For the Merseysiders, the acquisition of Gravenberch has proven to be a masterstroke. Under Jurgen Klopp’s tutelage, the 21-year-old midfielder has flourished, showcasing his immense potential and making a significant impact on the pitch. His performances have been nothing short of impressive, leaving fans and pundits lauding Klopp’s ability to identify and nurture talent.

In 10 appearances across all competitions for the Reds so far, the former Bayern man has two goals and as many assists and has looked absolutely brilliant in the middle of the park alongside Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.

As for Manchester United, the quest to bolster their midfield options continues. With both Frenkie de Jong and Ryan Gravenberch eluding their grasp, the Red Devils face a compelling challenge in addressing their midfield issues. For us Liverpool fans, it is pure entertainment to see Man United struggle.
