Marco Silva talks about Anfield after 2-1 loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup

Fulham manager Marco Silva believes Liverpool were “lucky” to find a way back into their League Cup semi-final clash, but the narrative of Anfield being a fortunate ground for the Reds is no coincidence. The visitors took an early lead through Willian, setting the stage for an intriguing battle. However, two quick goals from Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo turned the tide in Liverpool’s favour.

Silva pointed [via ECHO] to the deflection that led to Jones’s goal as a stroke of luck for Liverpool, altering the complexion of the game. The unpredictability of Anfield, coupled with the passionate home crowd, has often played a role in Liverpool’s favour. It’s not just about luck; it’s about the unique atmosphere and aura that Anfield carries.

“It is a big frustration for us. We spoke about it before the game, how we were winning 3-2 (in December at Anfield in the Premier League) and we lost the match in the last five minutes. We know what can happen against these sides and this crowd. It was a big boost for them after that.”

Anfield has been a fortress for Liverpool, witnessing historic comebacks, iconic moments, and a relentless spirit that defines the club’s identity. The fervent support from the Kop creates an environment that can be daunting for opposing teams. The history and tradition woven into the fabric of Anfield make it a challenging venue for any visiting side.

Daunting Ground

For Marco Silva, Anfield has been a ground of frustration throughout his managerial career, including his time at Everton. The recent League Cup semi-final clash adds to his winless record at this iconic stadium. In fact, the last time he won against the Reds was back in February 2017 during his time at Hull City. Andy Robertson started as left-back for Silva in that game at the MKM Stadium.

Liverpool’s ability to capitalise on pivotal moments, especially at home, is a testament to the synergy between the team and the Anfield faithful. The deflection that altered the trajectory of Jones’s shot may remain labelled as luck, but it also speaks to Liverpool’s capacity to seize opportunities and make decisive contributions when needed.

Anfield was buzzing, but only after the first goal.
Anfield was buzzing, but only after the first goal.

We have to feel for Fulham though. Both times this season, they played excellent football at a tough ground and ended up losing the game on both occasions. Guess that’s Fortress Anfield doing its thing.
