Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher explains the strategy of Liverpool in the transfer market, helping them compete with high-spending Manchester clubs

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher highlighted the right things Liverpool did in the transfer market to compete with the Manchester clubs. The Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has worked under a restricted budget throughout his tenure at the club.

However, Liverpool have enjoyed success under the German manager despite the restrictions while other clubs enjoyed astronomical spending power. Liverpool have followed the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rule as the regulations are in place to monitor spending power.

FFP’s function is to monitor, regulate and improve the financial capacity of football clubs. They ensure that the clubs do not spend more than the revenue they generate through various income methods.

In recent years, Liverpool’s most competitive rivals, Man City, have won numerous trophies due to their spending powers. However, they face over 100 charges for breaching the Premier League finance rules over multiple years.

Man City’s neighbour Man United have enjoyed massive spending power after garnering commercial success under Sir Alex Ferguson. In September 2023, BBC reported that Man United had a negative net spend of £1.19bn. Chelsea lies in second position with a negative net spend of £885.5m whereas Man City are in fifth position(£733.8m).

The report positioned Liverpool at 12th with a negative net spend of £395.3m. Despite spending comparatively little in the transfer market, the Reds continued to oppose Man City’s dominance in the Premier League.

Speaking on the Overlap “Stick to Football” podcast, Carragher explained the main factor that helped the Reds succeed. He said:

“Liverpool have basically competed with United and Man City over the last seven or eight years with Klopp, despite having less money, and I think a big thing they have done is that if they haven’t got the man they wanted they have not panicked and gone and got someone else”

Liverpool have used a shrewd transfer strategy with vigorous scouting and the ability to withstand social media pressure. The room for failure is small for the Reds but they have thrived under that pressure and made inspirational signings.

The Reds have signed world-class talents like Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino for bargain prices. They have also broken the record to bring in Virgil van Dijk and Allison Becker to help the club succeed. However, they executed significant moves only when the certainty of success aligned with the corresponding level of risk.
